CHARACTER
Character Name: Kravitz
Character Age: Very, very old. We have no exact reference for his age. His human form looks like a man in his mid to late 20s.
Canon: The Adventure Zone
Canon Point: Trapped in eternal stockade, post episode 58.

History: Little is known of Kravitz’s background and what happened to him prior to his appearances in The Adventure Zone canon. When he was younger he wanted to be an orchestral conductor. And then, in Kravitz’s own words,

“I was given a pretty difficult choice when I was faced with the career of being a bounty hunter for the goddess of death. I didn't grow up wanting to be that, of course.”

We are introduced to Kravitz in the Crystal Kingdom arc of TAZ, where he comes to collect the scientist Lucas and his mother, Maureen, for breaking her out of the eternal stockade, where all souls who attempt to escape the afterlife are kept. Lucas keeps Kravitz at bay, and in the meantime, Krav stumbles across a much larger bounty: Merle, Magnus, and Taako. After attacking the boys and failing in his first attempt to capture them, Kravitz tricks Merle into grabbing hold of a crystal by impersonating his god, Pan. This plan fails as well (although Merle loses an arm), and there is a second battle that Kravitz also retreats from. The next time he returns, Kravitz is distractedly ranting angrily at the boys about how they need to go with him, and Legion (a collection of souls who have escaped the astral plane) sneak up on him and drag Kravitz away.

Taako Merle and Magnus defeat Legion, and with the help of the real Pan, Merle banishes them back to the astral plane. Out of gratitude, Kravitz destroys the contracts he has out on the boys, taking into account two things: what they have done for him, and the fact that technically they haven’t entered the astral plane so they can’t have ‘escaped’ it.

“But, I swear, if you die again, that is it. No more Mister Nice Death.”

Kravitz also calls off the bounty he had on Lucas, stating that he assumes his necromancy days are far behind him. However, Lucas’ mother, Maureen, is a ghost, and must be taken back to Astral Plane. Magnus asks Kravitz to take a message to his late wife, and Kravitz concedes. He leaves with a warning to the boys- no more rule bending.

After this, Kravitz doesn’t show up again until a good 10 episodes later, at the end of The Eleventh Hour arc. When Taako arrives at his, Merle’s and Magnus’ shared quarters at the Bureau of Balance, Kravitz is waiting for him. At this point, the town of Refuge and everyone in it, including Taako and the others, have died in a time loop, many, many times. Kravitz states that he and Taako need to have a discussion about this, as they’d promised no more rule bending. The talk is cut short as Kravitz has to leave on work, but he attunes his stone of far speech to Taako’s, who reaches out to Kravitz first.

What Kravitz expects to be a rather grave discussion about the fate of a small community... ends up being a strange date to a wine and pottery class at the BoB’s very own “Chug N Squeeze.” The boys have a surprisingly revealing conversation about Taako’s life choices, ultimately resulting in Kravitz deciding to let the whole Refuge thing go, as he doesn’t technically have a bounty out on anyone in the town, anyway. He asks Taako about how much death the elf expects himself and his pals to be experiencing from here on out, so that he can make their case to the Raven Queen. Taako insists that the Refuge incident was an outlier, and Kravitz can expect an “average amount of death” from now on.

Kravitz awkwardly inquires as to Taako’s reasons for meeting with him (“Business or pleasure?”), but this moment is cut short when Kravitz senses an undead presence nearby- a dark entity, like a lich. As Kravitz looks around suspiciously, Taako’s umbra staff charges up an attack meant for Kravitz, but Taako redirects the staff skyward. Kravitz assumes the umbrella must be cursed, and leaves it at that, still unsure what he sensed. He departs through a rift, but not before telling Taako he had a lovely evening and asking if he will hear from him soon.

Again there is a gap before Kravitz shows up again- this time, at the tail end of the Suffering Game arc. A lich named Edward has possessed Magnus’ body, and his soul has been thrust out of him and is being sucked into the Astral Plane. Taako’s soul, thanks to a spell he cast on himself, is chasing after Magnus and attempting to drag him back to safety. As they drift over the Astral Plane, Taako and Magnus can see Kravitz, struggling in the sea below them. A thick, black oil-like substance drags him under, but not before he spots Taako and Magnus, and believes them to be dead.

Two episodes later, Kravitz frees himself from the black goo, now revealed to be the Hunger, an entity that devours worlds. He has fought through “god knows what” to reach the surface, and barricades himself inside the Eternal Stockade. He learns quickly that he is unable to open any rifts or commune with the Raven Queen.

Kravitz is safe, but he is also trapped and alone.

Personality:
Upon a first meeting, Kravitz can seem rather intimidating. He is handsome, and aware of it. He’s a snappy dresser, has good posture, and has mastered the art of looking down his nose at you. Essentially, he knows how to make an imposing figure, and between that and his job, he’s grown used to people being at least a little scared of him. It actually catches him a little off guard whenever someone isn’t- “Boy, you’re not intimidated by me at all, are you?” He can be somewhat prideful, and definitely cares about the impression he makes and the way he presents himself. It’s all crafted and very much on purpose.

He cares a lot about standards, rules, lines and limitations, especially when it comes to his work. ‘Tough but fair’, is an accurate description. That said, canon has proven that Kravitz can be swayed, if presented with a strong argument or incentive, at least to a point. As long as things work out in a way that he still deems acceptable, he isn’t above being swayed, and even sits patiently to hear out Taako’s side of things after the time loop incident in Refuge. He has a job to do and wants to do it well, but he isn’t a mindless drone dedicated only to his work and nothing else.

There’s a rather jarring contrast in the way he talks. Kravitz is generally very well spoken and polite, and seems to value manners to an extent... but will absolutely drop an f-bomb with zero hesitation. This is reflective of his personality as a whole, a strange mash up of collected, calm and refined, and yet the guy who fakes a cockney accent on the job for no good reason. “Kravitz, charmed,” to “that is some sick shit!” real quick. This posturing seems to fall apart the longer someone gets to know him, and it quickly becomes evident what a nerd he really is. (Fake machine gun sounds? Really?)

Kravitz is terribly awkward. He speaks directly, and has little tact in emotionally sensitive situations, (for example, he cracks a joke before agreeing to deliver Magnus’ message to his late wife) in part due to how long he’s been undead and surrounded by nothing but death and spirits. He is socially disconnected from society, cut off entirely from what it means to live a normal life, and he’s well aware of this fact. In some instances, he can come across as arrogant because of his unusual position and world view. When Taako jokes that he will see Kravitz again, “unless I die”, Kravitz doesn’t express concern, but rather laughs, and jokes back that they have ways of dealing with that.

Of course, he can also come across as arrogant simply because he outright is, sometimes. Kravitz definitely thinks he knows better than some people, and has a tendency to act high and mighty when in possession of knowledge others do not have. He is judgemental of other people, especially when annoyed or not getting his way. When riled up, he grows sarcastic and snappy, and isn’t above barbs and lllllliiiiilllltiiiing his voice mockingly. To put it bluntly, he’s capable of being an outright asshole. The distinction lies in the fact that he is not needlessly cruel.

If you cross Kravitz with intent, he is wrathful and terrifying, righteously angry and determined to make you see things his way. If you have made an honest mistake, he is, given the opportunity, capable of compassion and forgiveness.

Although obviously very, very acclimated to death, something about Taako’s recklessness leads him to inquire about why the elf lives such a dangerous life. He shows interest in him and his companions, and their relationship over the course of the show seems to be slowly ‘reconnecting’ Kravitz with the world around him. He is no longer just a cog in the works or an agent in the background of Faerun, but rather becoming an active participant in the world.

Kravitz is sappy. Expressions of affection initially make him flustered, although they are something he grows used to after time. He reacts to failure or mistakes with embarrassment, and somewhat studiously takes note on how to prevent the same thing happening in the future.

Inventory: Kravitz doesn’t have many worldly possessions, and even less that he keeps on his person. There’s his scythe- although he manifests that into existence, and the same goes for his tome, quill, and his clothes. There are a couple of rings he wears that are corporeal, his stone of far speech (a communication device), a few raven feathers for communing with the Raven Queen, and some gold he keeps on hand, because who knows when that might come in handy.

Abilities: Kravitz, in DnD verse, would be classed as ‘undead’, as far as race goes. This gives him a range of abilities, as does the fact that he is a contract bounty hunter for the Raven Queen, aka the goddess of death. He hunts down souls who have escaped death/the astral plane, and being in this position has also gifted him certain abilities.
Of course everything would be put under a permissions post so that people don’t have to interact with these powers, and if anything seems too OP I’m happy to find ways to tone them down! For example, his rift powers obviously wouldn’t be able to work outside of city bounds.

• Rifts – Kravitz can create rifts in space and time and move through them at will. He can bring objects or people with him, or even just toss objects through, and he can control the size of the rifts and close them any time.
• Flight - Kravitz is able to hover in any of his forms. He has only been shown properly flying in his reaper/skeletal form at this point, so I can make that a limitation.
• Summoning – Kravitz is capable of summoning his scythe, the judgement book (a tome/record of all the souls who have escaped death), a quill, his cloak, and other clothes.
• Thought + voice projection – He can project his thoughts into others mind, and they can talk back to him. As this is most likely the warlock ability, “Awakened Mind”, Kravitz must be able to see the person within 30 feet of him, and it can’t be used on animals/things that can’t talk. The exact rule is “they have to know a language”. He can also project his voice over technology. I would posit that the same basic rule about distance applies. The canon example is when he is in a crystal golem form and it’s difficult to speak, his voice filters over the boy’s communicators so they can hear him clearly.
• Form manipulation – Kravitz has three forms; a ball of light/raw soul, his skeleton form, and a form that is human in appearance. He is able to swap between this forms at will. He can also create forms for himself out of materials at hand – for example, rock- that his ‘ball of light/soul’ form resides within. When in one of these cobbled together forms, he seems to be unable to access his other magical abilities, and is constrained by the limit of his form. He can generally, however, hover, speak, explode pieces of himself, and break off pieces of himself for ranged attacks. (So essentially, Kravitz still has control over pieces that have broken off of him, though this weakens him.)
> An addendum to this is the fact that Kravitz’s various forms absorb/take all the damage he receives. Pieces of him will break off or wear down until he is too weak to hold a form together, at which point he becomes his vulnerable ball of light form without a choice. This leaves him vulnerable to actual damage. Being undead, he is also weak to god powers/radiant damage.

He’s good at yoga, too. Gotta have some down time.

Flaws: As a reaper- the Grim Reaper, as far as his world goes- Kravitz sits in some dubious, morally grey areas. Sure, collecting souls is his job. Sure, everyone has to pass over sometime. But, essentially, he’s still ending lives. There will definitely be people that hate him for what he does. He’s prideful. He has no trouble tricking people, mocking them, or just being plain nasty. In one of the podcasts many iconic moments, Kravitz tricked Merle into believing he was the god Pan, resulting in Merle subsequently losing his arm. There is yet to be an apology.
